It sits about seven degrees south of the Equator. The island is far from the coasts of Africa and South America. It is part of a British territory called Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha.

The main island, Saint Helena, is to the southeast. Another group of islands, Tristan da Cunha, is further south. This island is a very special place for science and history today.

Long ago, the island looked very different than it does now. In 1836, Charles Darwin visited and called it a "cinder."

He said the land was dry, treeless, and bare. There was almost nothing growing near the coast. To help the island, people began a big plan to plant trees. They brought plants from Argentina, Europe, and South Africa.

These trees helped catch rain and made the soil better. Now, the highest point is a lush tropical forest called Green Mountain.

People have been visiting this island for hundreds of years. A Portuguese sailor named João da Nova may have found it in 1501.

Later, Afonso de Albuquerque named it Ascension in 1503. For a long time, it was a place where sailors stopped to find meat. They hunted seabirds and large green turtles on the sandy beaches. The British began an organized settlement there in 1815.

They used the island to help ships and to watch the seas.

In the past, the island was very important for sea travel and war. During World War II, the United States built an airbase called "Wideawake."

This helped planes watch for submarines in the ocean. The island has also been a place for looking at the stars. In 1877, David Gill and his wife Isobel stayed there to study Mars.

They even had to move 20 tons of equipment to a beach called Mars Bay to get a better view.

Today, Ascension Island is a vital hub for modern technology. It is home to a Royal Air Force station and a space tracking station.

One of its most important jobs is helping the GPS system work. It is one of only four places on Earth that helps with GPS navigation. NASA also uses the island to track orbital debris in space.
