Many groups lived there, like the Wolof and Serer people. Legend says a man named Ndiadiane Ndiaye started the empire. Stories say he was a mysterious stranger. He helped settle a fight between villages. The people then asked him to be their king.

At its peak, the empire was very strong. It had many soldiers and horses. The people traded salt, beans, and cattle. They did not use coins. Instead, they used cloth and iron bars to pay for things.

Women also had important roles. A leader called the Lingeer was very powerful. She helped lead the state.

Later, the empire began to change. There were many fights over who should be king. Some states also wanted to be free. After a big battle in 1549, the empire broke apart. It became a smaller kingdom instead of a giant empire.
