He was born in 1754 in a place called Maratta. He was a Fulani scholar and a poet. Usman studied hard from a young age. His mother, Hauwa, was his first teacher. He was very well educated in Islamic studies.

Usman had many big ideas about how to live. He thought the leaders of his time were too greedy. He wanted to make society more fair. He also believed that women should get the same education as men. This was a new idea at that time.

His daughters even became famous writers and scholars.

In 1803, he started the Sokoto Caliphate. This was a large state in West Africa. It covered parts of modern Nigeria, Cameroon, and Niger. Usman wrote more than one hundred books. He wrote about law, history, and government. His many poems were also very famous. Many people still read his words today.
