Modibo Adama was a learned man. This means he was a scholar. He studied the Quran very hard. He traveled to many places to learn more. He spent ten years studying in a big city.

Adama was chosen to lead a special group. A great leader named Usman dan Fodio gave him a flag. This flag was a sign of his power. Adama used it to lead a movement to spread his faith. He started a large land called Adamawa. He named it after himself.

Adamawa became a very big place. It covered parts of Nigeria and Cameroon. It even reached the Central African Republic. Adama ruled from a town called Yola. He did not seek to be rich. He lived a simple life.

Adama had many helpers. He called the leaders of new lands "lamibe." These leaders helped him rule the large area. He worked to keep things fair for everyone. He wanted his people to talk to their leaders. He also wanted to stop people from being treated differently because of wealth.
