It is spoken by about 18 million people. Most speakers live in West Africa. They live in Senegal, Gambia, and Mauritania. In Senegal, 40 percent of people speak it as their first language. Many others use it as a second language. This helps people from different groups talk in big cities.

In cities like Dakar, people mix Wolof with French and Arabic. This is called Urban Wolof. It is used in markets, schools, and on phones.

Wolof has its own ways of writing. One way uses the Latin alphabet. This is the set of letters used in English.

Another way is called Wolofal. It uses an Arabic-based script. Many students in Islamic schools use Wolofal to read. Wolof is special because it does not use tones. Most other languages in its region do use tones to change word meanings. In Wolof, the verbs do not change. Instead, the pronouns change to show when an action happens. This is a unique way to build sentences.
