Yoruba is a major language in West Africa.

It is spoken by about 50 million people. Most speakers live in Nigeria, Benin, and Togo. Some communities also live in places like Gambia. Many people use Yoruba for religious songs and chants. This helps them keep their cultural traditions alive.

Yoruba has many different dialects. A dialect is a local way of speaking. There are five main dialect areas. These include the North-West, North-East, Central, South-West, and South-East.

Long ago, people wrote Yoruba using a script called Ajami. This script used Arabic letters. Today, most people use the Latin alphabet. They add small marks called diacritics to the letters. These marks show the pitch or tone of the words. There are three tones: high, mid, and low. The tone can change what a word means.
