It may be the largest language family in the world. This group includes over 1,540 different languages. Around 600 million people speak them.

One large part is called Atlantic-Congo. These languages use a noun-class system. This is a way to group words by type. It is like having many genders for nouns. The Bantu languages are a big part of this group. They have 350 million speakers.

Some languages are spoken by many people. Yoruba and Igbo are large in Nigeria. Swahili is very important too. It is a lingua franca. This means people use it to talk to each other. Swahili is used in parts of eastern Africa.

These languages may have started in West or Central Africa. They grew as people began to farm. Some groups, like the Kordofanian languages, live far away in Sudan. Experts still study how all these parts fit together. It is a big puzzle for researchers.
