Many millions of people speak these languages today. This is about 30 percent of all people in Africa.

Long ago, the ancestors of these people lived in West-Central Africa. This area is near modern Cameroon. About 4,000 years ago, they began to move. This was a big move called the Bantu expansion. They traveled to East and Southern Africa. As they moved, they met other people. Some groups stayed, like the Pygmy people. Others changed as the Bantu groups arrived. Some groups, like the Zulu, have millions of people. The Zulu live in South Africa. The Luba live in the Congo. Many different groups make up this large family of people.
