There are about 5,000 different groups in the world. Some estimates say there are 250 million to 600 million people in these groups. They live in every kind of climate on Earth.

Many Indigenous groups have lived in their areas for a very long time. They often have their own languages and ways of living. Most of these groups are a minority in their countries. This means they are a smaller group than the main group. In the past, many were treated unfairly by others. Some groups faced colonization by people from Europe.

Today, many people work to protect their rights. In 1989, a group called the ILO made rules to stop unfair treatment. In 2007, the United Nations made a big plan. This plan helps groups protect their culture and lands.

People can also choose to identify as Indigenous themselves. This helps them keep their special ways of life for the future.
