There is no single definition that everyone agrees on. Instead, people often look at how a group identifies itself. They might have a unique culture that is different from others in their country. They often have a very close relationship with their traditional territory. Many of these groups have also faced unfair treatment or discrimination.

Many groups also have their own ways of managing resources and land. Some scholars say these groups have stories about their origins that are not about being conquered. They might have their own legal systems or ways of making decisions.

In 1646, a writer named Sir Thomas Browne used the term to describe people native to America. He used it to show they were not from Africa like enslaved people. In the 1970s, the term became a way to link different groups together. This helped people talk about shared struggles across different borders. Using the plural "peoples" helps show that every group is unique.

There are many important facts and numbers about these groups. Estimates say there are between 250 million and 600 million Indigenous people.
