Right to education

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Every person in the world has a right to learn.

Right to education
Right to education

This right is found in many important international rules. These rules say that elementary school must be free for everyone. They also say that schools should help kids learn to respect others. Education helps people develop their own personalities and skills. It can also help nations live together in peace.

This is why many countries work to make sure schools are open to all.

To see if this right is working, experts use a tool called the 4As.

The 4As
The 4As

First is availability, which means there are enough buildings and teachers. Schools need safe rooms, books, and clean drinking water. Second is accessibility, meaning every child can reach a school. This should be true regardless of a child's race, religion, or wealth. Third is acceptability, which means the teaching is fair and high quality. Finally, adaptability means schools can change to help different students. They can adjust for cultural holidays or for kids with disabilities.

Learning has been around for a very long time. In the past, parents and churches were responsible for teaching children. This changed during the French and American Revolutions. After those events, education became a job for the state to handle. Many groups have since made new rules to protect this right. For example, the UNESCO Convention was made in 1960. The Convention on the Rights of the Child was made in 1989. These rules help make sure that education is a part of life for everyone.

Even with these rules, many children still face hard jobs. In 2021, the number of children out of school reached 250 million. This was often caused by social inequality. In 2023, about 16% of young people were not in any school.

Out of the people not in school, 48% were girls and young women. In India, a law from 2002 says school is free for kids aged 6 to 14. These numbers show that there is still much work to do.

Education can mean many different things to different people. In a narrow sense, it means learning from a teacher in a school. In a wider sense, it is how a group passes on knowledge to the next generation. This includes teaching skills for daily life and sharing cultural values.
