Kanuri language

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Kanuri is a way of speaking used by many people. It is spoken in parts of Africa like Nigeria and Chad. People also speak it in Niger, Cameroon, and Sudan. Around the year 2000, nearly 10 million people spoke it.

This language has a very long history. It was the language of the Kanem and Bornu empires. These empires ruled near Lake Chad for a thousand years. Kanuri has many different ways of being spoken. Some people speak Manga Kanuri. Others speak Yerwa Kanuri.

People use Kanuri to share wisdom through proverbs. A proverb is a short, wise saying. One Kanuri proverb says that hope is a pillar of the world. Another says wisdom is in the head, not the eye.

Writing Kanuri has changed over time. For four hundred years, people used Ajami. This is a way to write using Arabic letters. Now, many people use a Latin script. This uses the letters we often see in English. In 1975, a group made a standard way to write it in Nigeria. This helps people read and write the language clearly.
