They are the largest Turkic people in the North Caucasus. Most Kumyks live in the Republic of Dagestan. They also live in Chechnya and North Ossetia. In the past, their language helped many people talk to each other.

Kumyks have a very old history. Some scholars think they come from the Khazar people. This group lived in the area long ago. Other experts believe they came during later migrations. The Kumyks once had their own states. One was the Tarki Shamkhalate. This was an independent state.

In the 1800s, many Kumyks moved to new lands. This was due to wars in the region. Many moved to the Ottoman Empire. Some Kumyk families moved even further. They settled in places like Syria and Jordan. Today, more than 500,000 Kumyks live in Russia. Many still keep their culture and history alive.
