They are the largest Turkic people in this part of the world. Most Kumyks live in the Republic of Dagestan. They also live in Chechnya and North Ossetia. In the past, their language was a common way for many different people to talk to each other. This made their language very important for trade and travel. Today, they are a large and important group in their home lands.

Kumyks have lived in many different areas for a long time. They live on the Kumyk Plateau and near the Caspian Sea. They also live along the banks of the Terek River. In the past, these lands were called Kumykia. This was the area where their historical states used to exist.

The Kumyks have many different ways of living based on these lands. Their history is tied to the mountains and the sea.

Learning about where the Kumyks came from is a big job for scholars. There is no single answer that everyone agrees on. Some experts believe they are related to the Khazar people from the 8th century. Others think they arrived during later migrations of the Kipchak people. Some even suggest they came from the Golden Horde.

Many Kumyks moved to new places during the 1800s and 1900s. This happened because of wars and changes in the region. Many people moved to the Ottoman Empire, which is now Turkey. Some families even moved to Syria and Jordan.
