Later, some Latin-based versions were used as well. Since 1939, the Cyrillic alphabet has been the main way to write it.

In Tatarstan, there was even a law to use a Latin alphabet in 2001. However, a federal law in 2002 made Cyrillic the only official script there. Today, some people still use Arabic or Latin scripts unofficially.

There are two main ways that people speak the language. These different styles are called dialects. The first is the Central Dialect, also known as the Middle or Qazan dialect. This is the most common way to speak. It is also the basis for the standard literary Tatar used in books.

The second main style is the Western Dialect, called Mishar. This dialect is quite different from the Central one in how it sounds. Some people say the Mishar dialect is very close to ancient ways of speaking.

Learning about the sounds of Tatar is very interesting. The language has about nine or ten native vowels. It also uses a few extra vowels from words borrowed from Russian.

Some scientists say there are only two heights for these vowels. Others believe there are three different heights: high, mid, and low. The way people move their tongues can change how these sounds feel. This makes the music of the language very unique to listen to.

Tatar is closely related to other Turkic languages. It belongs to the Kipchak branch. This means it is a relative of languages like Kazakh, Kyrgyz, and Bashkir.

While it is similar to Crimean Tatar or Siberian Tatar, they are actually different languages. In some places, like rural Tatarstan, Tatar is the main language used every day. Even though some people worry about the language being used less in schools, it remains a vital part of life for millions.
