This language has a very long history. The oldest writing we have is on a stone. This is called the Myazedi inscription. It dates back to the year 1113.

Burmese writing uses many round shapes. These shapes look like little circles. This style comes from very old ways of writing on palm leaves.

When people speak, they use different pitches. This is called tone. The pitch of a sound can change the meaning of a word. People in different areas also use different words. For example, people in the north and south might use different words for family members. Some people speak special versions called dialects. These dialects share many sounds and the same writing. Even with these changes, most speakers can still understand each other.
