This language began long ago in Haiti. It grew when French settlers met people from Africa. Many enslaved people came from West Africa. They spoke languages like Fongbe and Igbo. They used French words to talk with each other. But they used the grammar from their African homes. This made the language unique. It is not the same as French.

There are three main ways people speak it. These are called dialects. People in the north, center, and south use different styles. The language also has words from the Taíno people. For example, the name for Haiti comes from a Taíno word. It means "Land of Great Mountains."
