João Baptista de Oliveira Figueiredo was a central figure in Brazilian history. He served as the 30th president of Brazil from 1979 to 1985.

His presidency represented the final chapter of a military regime. This period of government began after a coup d'état in 1964. Before leading the nation, Figueiredo served as the chief of the National Intelligence Service (SNI). This was an internal security agency. His predecessor, Ernesto Geisel, appointed him to the presidency. Figueiredo's term was defined by the process of political liberalization. This gradual opening of the government is known as abertura.

Figueiredo's administration managed several major political shifts. Shortly after taking office, he approved a broad amnesty law. This law was signed on August 28, 1979. It applied to politicians convicted of political crimes between 1961 and 1978. In 1980, the government abolished the existing two-party system. This change led to the creation of several new political groups. The Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB) became the successor to the MDB. The Democratic Social Party (PDS) became the successor to the ARENA party. Figueiredo joined the PDS himself.

Electoral reforms continued to change the political landscape. In 1981, Congress passed a law to restore direct elections for state governors. The general elections in 1982 showed a divided nation. The pro-government PDS received 43.22% of the vote. The opposition PMDB received 42.96% of the vote.

While the PDS won the national vote, the opposition won governorships in three major states. These were São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais. These shifts showed that the military regime was losing its total control over the country.

Despite these political changes, the era was marked by severe economic instability. Brazil faced a massive global economic crisis during this time. The second oil shock of 1979 caused major problems. International interest rates also rose sharply. These factors led to skyrocketing inflation. The inflation rate surged from 45% to 230% over just six years. At the same time, Brazil's foreign debt grew rapidly. The debt exceeded $100 billion for the first time. This forced the government to seek assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 1982.

Social and political tension grew as the economy struggled. In 1983, a movement called Diretas Já emerged. This movement pushed for direct presidential elections. The people wanted to vote for their leader directly rather than through Congress. However, the proposal was rejected by the legislature.

During this period, some hardline right-wing and military factions carried out terrorist attacks. Additionally, CIA documents suggest that Figueiredo supported the summary execution of political dissidents. These actions violated legal norms and human rights principles. These conflicts made the transition to democracy very difficult.

Figueiredo's personal life and health also impacted his leadership. He suffered a heart attack and sustained injuries from horse riding. These events required two extended medical leaves in 1981 and 1983. While he was ill, his civilian vice president, Antônio Aureliano Chaves de Mendonça, held office. However, the vice president did not wield significant political power. Eventually, the administration held an indirect election. This election led to the end of the military regime. Tancredo Neves succeeded Figueiredo as the new president.
