He held this high position for many years. His life story shows how one person can shape a whole country. He was born in a small village called Gerisa in 1916. This village was in the Lughaya district of British Somaliland.

Before he was a president, he had many different jobs. In 1932, he worked as a nurse in a place called Dikhil. Later, he became an entrepreneur, which is a person who starts businesses. Hassan spent much of his life fighting for independence. This means he wanted his land to rule itself instead of being ruled by France. In 1974, he called for a vote to decide the future. He became the president of a group called the LPAI in 1975. This group was formed when two other groups joined together. In May 1977, he became the President of the Governing Council. Hassan Gouled Aptidon was a central political figure in the history of Djibouti. He served as the nation's first president from 1977 until 1999. His life spanned much of the 20th century. He guided the territory through its transition from a French colony to an independent republic. His leadership defined the early years of the Djiboutian state.

Aptidon was born on October 15, 1916. He was born in Gerisa, a small village in the Lughaya district. At that time, this area was part of British Somaliland. He belonged to the Mamassan subset of the Issa clan. Before entering politics, he held several different professional roles. In 1932, he worked as a nurse stationed in Dikhil. He later became an entrepreneur, which is a person who organizes and operates a business.

His political career began with local and regional involvement. In 1946, he co-founded the Somali and Dankali Youth Club with Mahamoud Harbi Farah. The two men were elected to the Representative Council of the colony in 1951. However, they eventually separated due to different political goals. Aptidon campaigned against Harbi, who wanted the territory to join neighboring Somalia. Aptidon was elected as a French senator, serving from 1952 to 1957. He also served in the French National Assembly from 1959 to 1962.

The path to independence involved many different political groups and shifts. In the 1960s, Aptidon led the Democratic Union Issa. He was a signatory to the agreement of Arta in September 1963. During this decade, he also served as the education minister. He held several high-level positions, including vice-president of the Government Council from 1958 to 1959. He later became the Minister of the Interior. In 1974, he called for a vote to decide the future of the territory.

In 1975, Aptidon helped form the African People's League for Independence, known as the LPAI. This group was created by merging the African People's Union and the League for the Future and Order. Ahmed Dini served as the General Secretary of this group. In May 1977, Aptidon became the President of the Governing Council. On May 28, 1977, the Chamber of Deputies elected him as the first President of the Republic of Djibouti.

Aptidon's presidency saw significant changes in how the government functioned. In 1981, he established a one-party state. He declared his party, the People's Rally for Progress (RPP), as the only legal political party. In the June 1981 elections, he ran as the RPP candidate and won 84.58% of the vote. Following the start of the Djiboutian Civil War in 1991, the political system changed again. In September 1992, he allowed a referendum on multiparty politics. This permitted four different political parties to exist. However, in the December 1992 elections, the RPP won all 65 seats in the National Assembly. Aptidon was re-elected for a fourth term in May 1993 with 60.7% of the vote.

The 1990s were a difficult period for the nation's stability and wealth. The Djiboutian economy deteriorated significantly during this decade. Net external assets for the country fell by 40 percent. The World Bank issued a critical assessment of these economic conditions. They also noted social problems, such as the high consumption of qat, a local drug. During these years, Aptidon's nephew, Ismaïl Omar Guelleh, began handling more of the president's affairs.

Aptidon eventually prepared to pass leadership to the next generation. On February 4, 1999, he announced his intention to retire at the next election. The RPP congress chose Guelleh as their candidate. Guelleh won the election in April 1999 and succeeded his uncle on May 8, 1999. Aptidon lived until November 21, 2006, passing away at age 90. During his life, he received several honors, including the Order of the Crown of the Realm.
