He served as the Prime Minister of Japan during two distinct periods. He first held office from 2006 to 2007. He then returned to power from 2012 to 2020. This second term made him the longest-serving prime minister in Japanese history. He led the Liberal Democratic Party, which is often called the LDP. Abe was a central figure in shaping modern Japanese politics and international relations.

Abe's political identity was shaped by his influential family background. He was born in Tokyo on September 21, 1954. His father, Shintaro Abe, was a prominent politician and foreign minister. His maternal grandfather was Nobusuke Kishi, who served as Prime Minister. Kishi was a founding member of the LDP in 1955. Abe viewed Kishi as his primary role model. This connection influenced Abe's strong conservative and nationalist views. He often sought to strengthen Japan's national identity and security.

His early career involved significant preparation in diplomacy and law. Abe graduated from Seikei University with a degree in political science. He also studied at the University of Southern California. Before entering politics, he worked for Kobe Steel. He later served as a secretary to his father. This role allowed him to travel to 81 different countries. These travels taught him how to build ties with foreign leaders. In 1993, he was elected to the House of Representatives.

As a member of parliament, Abe focused on several intense issues. He was a leader in the movement to help Japanese abductees. These were citizens taken to North Korea. He worked with the families of these victims to demand action. He also joined several right-wing conservative groups. One such group was called Nippon Kaigi. Abe held very strong views on Japanese history. He often downplayed certain wartime atrocities in school textbooks. He also sought to revise Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution. Abe's leadership style involved major economic and security shifts. He introduced a plan known as "Abenomics" to fight economic stagnation. This plan aimed to stimulate growth through various financial strategies. In 2015, he passed the Legislation for Peace and Security. This law allowed the Japan Self-Defense Forces to deploy overseas under strict rules. This decision was very controversial and led to many protests. On the international stage, he helped start the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue. This group included the United States, Australia, and India. It was designed to balance the rising power of China.

However, he made a historic comeback in 2012. He led the LDP to a landslide victory in that election. He became the first former prime minister to return to office since 1948. During his long tenure, he met many world leaders. He worked closely with leaders like Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.

Despite his long service, his life ended in a sudden tragedy. In July 2022, Abe was delivering a campaign speech in Nara.

During the speech, he was assassinated by Tetsuya Yamagami. The attacker claimed he was motivated by Abe's ties to the Unification Church. This was the first assassination of a former Japanese prime minister since 1936. The event shocked the nation and the world.

Abe remains a polarizing figure in Japanese society. Supporters praise him for increasing Japan's international status. They believe he made the country's security much stronger. However, critics argue his policies were too nationalistic. They worry his views on history damage relations with neighbors. Specifically, his stances caused tension with China and South Korea. His legacy continues to influence how Japan views its past and its future role in the world.
