Long ago, they were known as the Jurchen people. They lived in a place called Manchuria.

Many Jurchen people were settled farmers. They grew crops like wheat, rice, and soybeans. They also raised animals like pigs, sheep, and horses. Some Jurchen groups lived near the Songhua River.

In the year 1114, a leader named Wanyan Aguda united the tribes.

He started the Jin dynasty. Later, the Manchus ruled two big dynasties in China. These were the Later Jin and the Qing.

In 1635, a leader named Hong Taiji gave the people the name "Manchu." This replaced the old name, Jurchen. Today, the Manchu are the fourth-largest ethnic group in China. They live in 31 different regions. Many live in a place called Liaoning. Some live in Beijing or Inner Mongolia. They have many special towns and townships across the country.
