The Liao dynasty was a powerful imperial empire ruled by the Khitan people.

This state existed from 916 to 1125. It was governed by the Yelü clan, a powerful family of leaders. At its peak, the empire controlled massive territories. These lands included Manchuria and the Mongolian Plateau. It also spanned the northern Korean Peninsula and parts of Siberia. The Liao was the first state to achieve total control over all of Manchuria.

The Khitan people followed a nomadic way of life. They moved their settlements according to the changing seasons. Horses were essential to their survival and daily livelihood. Khitan men practiced archery to hunt for food. They also drank a beverage known as kumiss.

Long before the empire formed, eight Khitan tribes shared power. These tribes used a system where leadership rotated every three years. They engaged in trade with neighbors, exchanging animal skins and horses.

The empire rose from the consolidation of Khitan power. In the 8th century, Khitan power began to grow. By the late 9th century, they began expansionist campaigns. Around 916, a chieftain named Abaoji became the leader. He proclaimed a Chinese-style dynastic state.

This transition marked the formal beginning of the Liao dynasty. The state's identity was reflected in its changing names. It was known as both the Great Khitan and the Great Liao.

Naming conventions for the state shifted over time. In 938 or 947, Emperor Taizong renamed it the Great Liao. This change likely reflected the inclusion of non-Khitan peoples. In 983, Emperor Shengzong changed the name back to Great Khitan. This was a reassertion of Khitan identity. Later, in 1066, Emperor Daozong reintroduced the name Great Liao. This title remained in official use until the dynasty fell. The Khitan language used both names depending on which took precedence. The word "Liao" (Hura) remains a mystery to historians. Some think it means "black," "broad," or refers to the Liao River.

The Liao dynasty engaged in many military campaigns. They fought groups like the Tatars, the Zubu, and the Song dynasty.

In 1004, the Liao launched an expedition against the Northern Song. This resulted in heavy fighting and large casualties for both sides. To end the conflict, they signed the Chanyuan Treaty. This treaty forced the Northern Song to recognize the Liao as peers. It created a period of peace and stability lasting about 120 years.

The empire eventually collapsed due to external pressure. In 1125, the Jurchen-led Jin dynasty destroyed the Liao. They captured the Liao leader, Emperor Tianzuo. However, the dynasty did not vanish entirely. A loyalist named Yelü Dashi established the Western Liao in Central Asia.

This successor state, also called Qara Khitai, ruled for almost a century. It was eventually conquered by the Mongol Empire. The term "Khitai" became so well-known it influenced other languages. In medieval Europe, it was known as "Cathay."

The legacy of the Khitan people remains visible in various modern names. Turkic and Slavic peoples still use words related to Khitai today. This connection links the ancient empire to the modern world.
