He is remembered as a nomad who received the complete direct transmission of several teachings. These include Sutra, Tantra, and Dzogchen. Dzogchen is also known as "Great Perfection" or Ati Yoga. Many traditions view him as the first human to receive these full teachings. Some historians describe him as a mythical figure. Others suggest his existence is historically problematic. Regardless, he is seen as the wellspring for many mind teachings in Tibet.

The core of his teaching focuses on the nature of the mind. He taught that the mind is the original Buddha and the Ultimate Reality. This state exists beyond birth and cessation. This means the mind has no beginning and no end. Garab Dorje compared the nature of the mind to the sky. He taught that all apparent phenomena are also beyond birth and cessation. To practice this, he emphasized a specific type of meditation. This practice involves allowing the natural state to be as it is. One should not seek to change or find anything new.

Stories regarding the birth of Garab Dorje vary significantly between different accounts. One interpretation states he was the son of Su-dharmā and a daughter of King Upa-rāja. This took place in the land of Uddiyana. Another account places his mother, Su-dharmā, near the banks of Lake Kutra. The Nyingmapa lineage offers a more miraculous version of his birth. They claim he was born to a virgin daughter of the king of Odiyana. This tradition even says he recited Dzogchen tantras at the moment of his birth.

Garab Dorje's wisdom was passed down through a specific lineage of teachers. His chief disciple was a man named Manjushrimitra. Before becoming a student, Manjushrimitra attempted to debate Garab Dorje. He wanted to defeat what he believed were heretical views. However, Manjushrimitra lost the debate and realized his errors. Following this, Garab Dorje gave him the complete Dzogchen empowerments. These teachings eventually reached Padmasambhava through an unbroken chain. This chain included Manjushrimitra, Śrī Simha, Jñānasūtra, and Vimalamitra. Garab Dorje also received Mahayoga teachings from the Mahasiddha Kukuraja.

The most famous part of his legacy is the "Three Words that Strike to the Heart of the Essential Point." These are also called Tsig Sum Nèdek. This teaching is considered the pinnacle of Dzogchen wisdom. It focuses on the direct recognition of the nature of the mind. It also emphasizes single-pointed concentration and confidence in liberating thoughts. When Garab Dorje reached the state of paranirvana, his body dissolved into a mist of rainbow light. As he departed, he gave a final gift to Manjushrimitra. This gift was a golden casket the size of a thumbnail. Inside were these three essential precepts.

Several important texts are associated with Garab Dorje. While not all were written by him, the tradition holds that the Seventeen Tantras were revealed to him. Other texts attributed to him include "Cutting Through the Three Times." He is also linked to "Overwhelming the Six Modes of Consciousness with Splendour." Other titles include "Natural Freedom That Underlies Characteristics" and "Direct Encounter with the Three Kayas." He is also credited with "Vajra Fortress" and "Deep Immersion in Awareness."

The influence of Garab Dorje connects to many broader concepts in Buddhist philosophy. His teachings help define the Nyingma school's approach to the mind. The emphasis on the mind as the original Buddha influences how practitioners view reality. His life story connects historical geography, such as Uddiyana, with spiritual tradition. The transition from debate to discipleship shows how ideas are tested and shared. His legacy remains a fundamental part of the Dzogchen tradition today.
