Rigpa is a central concept in the Dzogchen tradition. It is often called "knowledge" or "pristine awareness."

This awareness is seen as the fundamental ground of everything. Some thinkers describe it as a special kind of wisdom. It is a state that is free from all delusion. This knowledge is not something you find by searching. Instead, it is a recognition of what is already there. It is described as being effortless and natural once it is known.

Rigpa has two main aspects that work together. The first part is called kadag, which means "primordial purity."

The second part is lhun grub, meaning "spontaneous presence." This means things can happen on their own without a starting point. Some people use metaphors to help explain these ideas. They say rigpa is like a mirror that reflects everything clearly. The mirror shows many images but is not changed by them.

It is also like a crystal ball that takes on colors without changing itself.

History shows that these ideas have deep roots. Many Dzogchen teachings come from older Indian Buddhist texts. For example, the idea of Buddha-nature is very important here. The 14th-century writer Longchenpa wrote about these views in his work. He explained how the enlightened nature is already inside the mind.

This means people do not need to develop a new state. They only need to recognize the state that is already present. This process is called "self-recognition" rather than a long struggle.

There are many specific details about where rigpa lives. Some texts say rigpa is located in the heart center.

It is connected to the energy body of a person. This body includes things called channels, winds, and circles. Practitioners use different methods to help integrate rigpa into daily life. One part of their teaching is called the Instruction Class. This includes practices known as trekchö and tögal. A person who stays in this state is called a Rigdzin.

The opposite of rigpa is a state called ma rigpa. This is often described as ignorance or unawareness.

A common way to explain this is like clouds hiding the sun. When people do not recognize their true nature, they fall into delusion. This can happen through three different phases of error. One error is failing to see the single source of everything. Another is not seeing appearances as they really are. The last involves creating false ideas about "self" and "others." Through practice, people aim to move from ignorance back to rigpa.
