He was a Buddhist monk, but he was also a famous scientist. People remember him for studying the stars and fixing the calendar. He was also a master of very old books and ideas. His life was a mix of religious study and science. This made him a very important figure in his time. He even advised the Emperor on how to help the people.

One of his biggest jobs was leading a huge study of the land and sky. This was called an astrogeodetic survey. He wanted to collect new data about the stars. This data helped people predict solar eclipses more accurately. It also helped fix mistakes in the calendar system. To do this, he set up thirteen different test sites. These sites were very far apart across the empire. They stretched from Vietnam all the way north to Lake Baikal.

Yi Xing was also a very clever inventor. He worked with an engineer named Liang Lingzan. Together, they built a celestial globe that showed the movement of the stars. This globe was powered by water. It used a special part called an escapement to help it turn. This was one of the earliest ways to make a clock-like machine. He built on ideas from earlier inventors like Zhang Heng. His work helped start a long tradition of Chinese astronomical clocks.

In his religious life, Yi Xing was a leader in Esoteric Buddhism. He helped translate a holy book called the Mahāvairocana-sūtra. He worked with an Indian master named Śubhakarasiṃha to do this. Yi Xing acted as an editor and a recorder for the work. He also wrote a famous commentary to explain the book's meaning. This writing was very helpful to others. It even helped a monk in Japan start a new tradition. His religious ideas spread far beyond the borders of China.

Many stories and legends grew around Yi Xing over the years. Some stories say he was born with a bright light on his forehead. Other tales say he had magical powers or could talk to spirits. While these are likely just stories, they show how much people respected him. Today, people still honor his memory in special places. You can visit the Memorial Pagoda of Monk Yi Xing in China. His tomb is also located on the beautiful Mount Tiantai.
