Zhiyi was a monumental Chinese Buddhist monk, philosopher, and meditation teacher.

Zhiyi's system relied heavily on the teachings of the Lotus Sutra. He used this text as the foundation for his entire framework. He also studied other important works, such as the writings of Nagarjuna. One of his most significant logical innovations was the Threefold Truth. This concept unifies three different perspectives into one holistic view. These perspectives are emptiness, provisional existence, and the middle. The middle truth acts as a bridge between the other two. He also created a method to interpret all Mahayana teachings through the Lotus Sutra. This allowed him to create a coherent and unified religious structure.
Zhiyi's life was shaped by significant personal and political changes. He was born into the Chen family in the Huarong District. This area is now part of Hubei province. When he was seventeen, he lost his parents and his hometown. This happened because of the Western Wei army. He became a Buddhist monk at the age of eighteen. As a young monk, he studied Mahayana sutras and the Vinaya. The Vinaya refers to the rules for monastic life. At age twenty-three, he met his most important teacher, Nanyue Huisi. Huisi was a master of meditation and the Lotus Sutra.
Under Huisi's guidance from 560 to 567, Zhiyi learned many complex practices. He studied the Lotus Samadhi Repentance and the Pratyutpanna Samadhi. He also practiced the "four practices of ease and bliss." These were specific methods based on the Lotus Sutra. In 567, Zhiyi became Huisi's successor at age thirty. He moved to the Waguansi monastery in Jinling to teach. He spent eight years teaching at the capital. Later, in 575, he moved to Tiantai mountain for eleven years. He went there to focus on deep study and practice. During this time, Emperor Wu was leading a persecution of Buddhism in the north. Zhiyi built the Xiuchansi monastery on the mountain during this period.
Zhiyi's legacy is preserved through his "Three Great Works."
Zhiyi also wrote several important meditation manuals. One was the *Explanation of the Sequential Dharma Gates of Dhyāna Pāramitā*. This text taught a gradual approach to meditation. He also wrote the *Six Wondrous Dharma Gates*. This work presented a "variable" approach to calming and insight. Another important text was the *Small Calming and Insight*. This was likely the first practical meditation manual in China. It later influenced the development of Chan meditation. Zhiyi also composed four different repentance rites. These rituals remain part of Chinese Buddhist practice today. They include the Golden Light Repentance Practice and others. These works show his deep focus on structured spiritual discipline.
Zhiyi's influence spread far beyond the borders of China. The Tiantai school became a major tradition in East Asia. Its teachings reached Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. In Japan, the tradition is known as Tendai Buddhism.
