Wonhyo was a very important thinker in East Asian Buddhism. He lived in Korea a long time ago. He was a scholar-monk who wrote many books. His writings include over 80 works. These works are spread across 240 fascicles.

He wrote about the nature of the mind and Buddha-nature. His ideas became famous in Korea, China, and Japan. He helped shape how people in those lands understood Buddhism. His work was a foundation for all Korean Buddhism.

Wonhyo had a famous experience that changed his life. In the year 661, he was traveling toward China. He was with a friend named Uisang. They were caught in a heavy rainstorm. They found shelter in what seemed like an earthen sanctuary. Wonhyo felt very thirsty during the night. He reached out and found a vessel to drink from. The water felt cool and very refreshing to him.

The next morning, he saw the truth. He had actually drunk from a human skull. The water was not refreshing at all. This taught him that the mind creates our reality. He realized he did not need to travel to China.

Wonhyo lived a life that was quite different from other monks. He left the priesthood after having an affair with Princess Yoseok. He then lived as a layman. He called himself a "Layman of Minor Lineage." He wanted to reach common people in small towns. He used songs and dances to teach his ideas. Some people thought his behavior was unusual. He even visited bars and played the lute. He used these "skillful means" to help all living beings. This made him a popular folk hero in Korea.

One of his biggest goals was to harmonize different ideas. He did not like it when people argued about teachings. He called this "harmonization of disputes." Many scholars liked to rank teachings in a hierarchy. Wonhyo thought this was a mistake. He believed all teachings were interconnected. He thought they were all part of one harmonious whole. He believed that different words could point to the same truth. This helped people see that different schools were not actually fighting.

His philosophy focused on the idea of "One Mind." He believed the mind has two different sides. One side is pure and unchanging. The other side is part of our everyday, changing world. Wonhyo lived from 617 to 686. He died at the age of 70 at Hyeolsa. His son, Seol Chong, was a great scholar too. Wonhyo's remains were placed at Bunhwangsa. His many ideas still influence thinkers in East Asia today.
