Ko Un is a famous poet from South Korea. His writing reaches people in more than fifteen different countries.

He has written about 155 volumes of work. These include poems, stories, plays, and even travel books. Some of his books are very short and quiet. Other books are huge, like his seven-volume epic called Paektu Mountain. This long work is about the Korean independence movement. People value his writing because it covers so many parts of life. He uses his words to remember history and people.

Writing is how Ko Un shares his deep feelings. He often writes about the spiritual life of Buddhism.

He once lived as a Buddhist monk for ten years. During this time, he wrote his first poems and his first novel. His novel, Cherry Tree in Another World, was published in 1961. He also writes poems that are very short, like haiku. These small poems show quick images of a moment. He also works on a huge project to make a Pan-Korean Dictionary. This helps scholars from both sides of the 38th Parallel study their language.

Ko Un's life began in a very difficult time. He was born in 1933 in Gunsan.

At that time, Japan occupied Korea. During the occupation, the local culture and language were suppressed. His grandfather taught him how to read and write in Korean. When he was twelve, he found a book of poems by Han Ha-un. This discovery inspired him to start writing his own poetry. He was a teenager when the Korean War started in 1950.

War changed his life in many ways. He had to work as a grave digger during the fighting.

The noise of the war was so loud that he became deaf in one ear. Later, he became a leader in the movement for democracy. He wanted his country to be run fairly. Because of this work, he was sent to prison three times. In 1980, he was sentenced to twenty years in prison. He was released in August 1982 after a general pardon.

One of his most amazing projects is called Maninbo. This title means "Ten Thousand Lives."

He began this work between 1983 and 2010. He made a special vow while he was in prison. He promised that if he lived, he would write a poem for every person he ever met. He says he feels a calling to bring the dead back to life through his writing. This massive collection shows his skill and his heart. It is a way to honor everyone he has known.
