Jinul was a very important monk from Korea. He lived during the Goryeo period. He is known as the most influential figure in Korean Seon Buddhism. Seon is a type of Buddhist practice. Jinul helped bring different groups together. He wanted them to be one big organization. This group is called the Jogye Order.

Jinul learned in a very special way. He did not have one permanent teacher. Instead, he relied on himself. He used Buddhist scriptures to guide him. These are holy books that teach important ideas. He used these books to help his meditation. He combined reading with his own quiet practice. This helped him grow as a monk.

His life began in the year 1158. His birth name was Jeong. When he was 15, he left his family. In 1173, he became a monk. He studied under a master named Jonghwi. Jinul liked to be alone in quiet places. He traveled to many different temples. He studied the entire Tripiṭaka, which is a large collection of teachings.

Jinul founded a community in the mountains. He called this the samadhi and prajñā society. This group wanted to be disciplined and pure-minded. He eventually founded Songgwangsa on Jogyesan mountain. In 1209, he finished a very large book. It was called the Excerpts from the Dharma Collection and Special Practice Record with Personal Notes. King Huijong respected him greatly. The King even renamed a mountain to honor him.

Jinul had many deep ideas about the world. One key idea is called Essence-Function. He also taught about Nirvana. He believed Nirvana is a beautiful essence inside everyone. He thought the true nature of people never changes. Even when people feel lost, their minds stay aware. His work changed how people practice Buddhism in Korea. He died in the year 1210.
