Seonjo was the 14th king of the Joseon kingdom in Korea.

He was born in 1552 in Hanseong, which is modern-day Seoul. His father was Prince Deokheung and his grandfather was King Jungjong. Seonjo was originally named Yi Yeon. He was adopted by Queen Insun before becoming the ruler. When King Myeongjong died without an heir, Seonjo became the king. He was crowned in 1567 at only 16 years old.

At the start of his reign, Seonjo worked to help common people.

He wanted to fix the problems left by older, chaotic reigns. He supported many Confucian scholars to help run the government. These scholars included famous thinkers like Yi Hwang and Yi I. Seonjo also changed the civil service exams. Before this, exams focused mostly on literature. He made history and politics more important for new officials. These reforms brought a brief time of peace to the land.

Soon, the government began to split into two fighting groups.

These groups were called the Westerners and the Easterners. The Westerners were led by Shim Eui-gyeom and were very conservative. The Easterners were led by Kim Hyowon and wanted more reforms. This political fighting lasted for 200 years and eventually hurt the nation. The two sides even lived on different sides of the city. Because they argued so much, they could not agree on how to defend the country.

In 1592, a major war called the Imjin War began.

Hideyoshi of Japan had unified Japan and wanted to invade China. He asked to march through Korea to get there. Seonjo refused this request and tried to prepare for war. However, the fighting factions in the court could not agree on the danger. In April 1592, thousands of Japanese troops arrived by sea. They burned many forts and marched toward the capital, Hanyang. The war was very difficult and caused much damage to the land.

During the war, Seonjo made some very important choices.

He wrote government documents in Hangul so common people could read them. This was a special way of writing that was easier than Hanja. He also promised rewards to anyone who helped fight the invaders. Even though the land was devastated, leaders like Admiral Yi Sun-sin helped defend the seas. Seonjo tried to fix taxes and training after the fighting ended. He died in 1608, leaving a country that was working to rebuild itself.
