Jeongjo was one of the most important kings in Korean history. He ruled during the Joseon dynasty. He was the 22nd monarch to lead this strong land. Jeongjo had a very difficult childhood. His father was Crown Prince Sado. In 1762, King Yeongjo executed Sado. This was a very sad time for the young prince. Because of this, some leaders did not think Yi San should be king. They called him the "son of a prisoner." To help him become the heir, the king made him the adoptive son of Prince Hyojang. This was done to protect his right to rule. He finally became king in 1776.

Once he was king, Jeongjo worked hard to fix many problems. He wanted to clear his father's name. He even moved his court to the city of Suwon. He built the Hwaseong Fortress to protect his father's tomb.

This fortress is now a famous UNESCO World Heritage Site. He also made a group of royal guards called the Changyongyeong. He created this group in 1785 to keep himself safe. He wanted to make sure he could lead without fear.

Jeongjo also cared deeply about his people's daily lives. During a great drought, he performed rituals to ask for rain. When people got sick from measles, he gave out free medicine. He also changed laws to help people earn money. In 1791, he started a free trade law. Before this, only certain groups could sell goods. Now, anyone could sell things at the market. This helped many families survive and grow.

Learning was a very big part of his life. He built a royal library called Kyujanggak. This library helped him find talented scholars to help run the country. He even allowed people from lower social classes to hold government jobs. This was a very big change for society. He supported many smart thinkers known as Silhak scholars. Even though he died in 1800, his work changed Korea forever. He is remembered as a wise and caring leader.
