The Jiaqing Emperor was a leader of the Qing dynasty in China.

He was born on November 13, 1760, in the Old Summer Palace. His personal name was Yongyan. His father was the Qianlong Emperor. The Qianlong Emperor changed the way Yongyan's name was written. He used a less common character for the word 'yong.' This was done to follow an old tradition. In this tradition, common characters were not used in imperial names. This helped keep the emperor's name special and unique.

Becoming the emperor was a slow process for him. His father secretly chose him as the successor in 1773. This happened after two other sons died from diseases. In 1789, he was named Prince Jia. In 1795, his father said he would step down. The Jiaqing Emperor took his official title in February 1796. However, he did not have full power yet. His father remained the real leader for three more years. He only took full control after his father died in 1799.

Once he was in charge, the emperor worked to fix things.

He focused on cleaning up the government. He punished a man named Heshen for being corrupt. Heshen was a favorite of the previous emperor. He used his power in bad ways to gain wealth. The emperor also tried to stop people from smuggling opium. He wanted to bring back the prosperity of the 18th century. He also promoted leaders who followed strict Confucian rules.

His time as leader was filled with many hard jobs. The empire faced several large rebellions, like the White Lotus. These fights were very expensive for the imperial treasury. In 1813, a group called the Eight Trigrams tried to attack the Forbidden City. They even wanted to kill the emperor. He also dealt with difficult relations with other countries. In 1816, an ambassador named William Amherst came from Great Britain. The visit failed because Amherst would not perform a kowtow. This was a special way of bowing to the emperor.

Beyond ruling, the Jiaqing Emperor was a very smart man. He was a scholar who loved the Confucian classics. He even wrote 15,267 poems during his life. He also ordered the printing of beautiful art collections. The emperor died on September 2, 1820, at a summer palace. Some people thought he died from a stroke. Others thought he might have been struck by lightning. His son, Mianning, became the next emperor. He was buried in the Chang mausoleum complex.
