Seonjo was the 14th king of Joseon, a land in Korea. He became king in 1567 when he was only 16 years old. At first, Seonjo was a good leader. He wanted to help common people. He changed how leaders took tests. He wanted them to study history and politics. This helped the country stay peaceful for a short time.

But soon, the leaders began to fight. They split into two groups. One group was called the Westerners. The other was called the Easterners. These groups argued a lot. This fighting made the nation weak. Because of this, the army was not ready for danger.

In 1592, Japan invaded Korea. This was a long and hard war. Many buildings and palaces were burned. The king had to move far away to stay safe. During this time, Seonjo wrote messages in Hangul. Hangul is a way of writing that common people could read. He also gave rewards to people who helped in the war.

After the war, the land was in bad shape. Many people were hungry. Seonjo tried to fix the laws and taxes. He died in 1608.
