These leaders were young and well-educated. Kim Okkyun was the leader of the group. They wanted to make Korea independent. They wanted to stop China from interfering in Korean affairs. They also wanted to end special rights for the ruling class. They wanted all people to have equal rights.

The coup began on December 4, 1884. The group used a party to start their plan. They took control of the royal palace in Seoul. They also moved King Gojong to a different palace. They had help from Japan during this time.

But the plan did not work. There were 1,500 Chinese soldiers in Seoul. The group only had about 140 Japanese troops. The Chinese soldiers stopped the coup in three days.
