In the 1800s, many Asian nations signed unfair rules. These were called unequal treaties.

Western countries like Britain and France made these rules. Often, they used military force to make others sign.

These rules took land and money from Asian countries. For example, Britain took Hong Kong from China. Many ports were opened for foreign trade. Some rules gave foreign citizens special rights. This was called extraterritoriality. It meant foreign people did not follow local laws. Instead, they followed the laws of their own home nations.

These rules hurt the power of China, Japan, and Korea. In China, people called this a century of shame. Many people worked hard to end these rules. In 1921, China signed a fair treaty with Germany. This was a big step toward being equal. Later, during World War II, the United States and Britain helped end some of these rules. It took a very long time to make things fair again.
