In North Korea, a group called the Kapsan faction once worked with leader Kim Il Sung. They were veterans who fought against Japan long ago. Around 1967, they began to disagree with Kim. They wanted to change the economy. They wanted to spend more money on people and less on the army. They also wanted a new leader to follow Kim. They thought Pak Kum-chol should take over.

Kim Il Sung did not like these ideas. He saw them as a threat to his rule. He told the party to follow only him. This was called a monolithic ideological system. This system put Kim at the center of everything.

By April 1967, the group lost their power. Many members were kicked out of the party. Some were sent to work in the country. Others went to prison. Pak Kum-chol died during this time. Kim's son, Kim Jong Il, helped his father. He took part in the work to remove the group. This was his first big job. It helped him become a powerful leader later on.
