The Kapsan faction incident was a major turning point in North Korean history. It was an unsuccessful attempt to change how the country was led around 1967. The Kapsan faction was a group of veterans from the anti-Japanese struggle. These people had fought alongside Kim Il Sung in the 1930s and 1940s. Because they shared this history, they were once very close to him. However, they eventually began to disagree with his way of ruling the nation.

This group wanted to make several big changes to the country. They believed the government should focus more on the national economy. They wanted to spend money on light industry to help people live better lives. They also felt the military should not get all the funds. Most importantly, they wanted a different leader to follow Kim Il Sung. They supported Pak Kum-chol, who was a very high-ranking party member. Pak was unhappy with how much attention was focused only on Kim.

History shows that these disagreements grew after a meeting in 1966. The faction members began to act in ways that Kim Il Sung saw as disloyal. They published memoirs and even printed photos of Pak next to Kim. Some members even made works that honored Pak's family. Kim Il Sung saw these actions as a threat to his authority. He wanted a system where everyone followed his ideas alone. He called for a monolithic ideological system to keep the party united.

In April 1967, the situation reached a breaking point. Kim Il Sung held meetings to remove the faction from power. More than 100 members were expelled from the Workers' Party of Korea. Pak Kum-chol was sent to a factory and later died. Other leaders like Yi Hyo-sun and Kim To-man faced very harsh punishments. Many other members disappeared from public life or went to prison. This period was a time of great change for the government.

This event changed North Korea forever by making Kim Il Sung's rule unchallengeable. His son, Kim Jong Il, played a big role during this time. At only 26 years old, he helped his father investigate the faction. This was the first major political task given to him. It helped him start his path toward becoming the next leader. After the incident, the country began using more propaganda to honor Kim.
