Juche is the official idea that guides North Korea. It is used by the Workers Party of Korea to shape how the country works. The idea is also called Kimilsungism-Kimjongilism. It focuses on the belief that people are the masters of everything. This means people should decide their own future. The idea also emphasizes the importance of a strong leader. It aims to make the nation very independent.

To be truly independent, Juche follows three main steps. First, a country needs political independence. This means a nation makes its own choices without pressure from other lands. Second, it needs economic self-sufficiency. This means a country should produce its own goods and tools. For example, they use local coal to make a fiber called vinylon. Third, it needs military self-reliance. This means building a domestic defense industry to protect the land.

History shows how this idea grew over time. North Korean sources say Kim Il Sung created it. He was the first leader of the country. In 1955, he gave a famous speech about Juche. Some scholars believe his adviser, Hwang Jang-yop, helped develop the idea. Later, Kim Il Sung's son, Kim Jong Il, expanded it. He published a major book on the subject in 1982. He wanted to make the idea a complete guide for the nation.

There are many specific facts about how Juche works in daily life. North Korea even uses a special calendar based on this idea. It started in 1997 after Kim Il Sung passed away. The calendar counts years from his birth in 1912. For instance, the year 2024 is called Juche 113. The country also works hard to build its own technology. In 2017, they had about 15,000 CNC machines for making parts. These machines help them stay self-reliant in many ways.

Juche connects to many things you might already know about history. It grew during a time when many countries were choosing their own paths. North Korea used these ideas to stay independent from large powers like the Soviet Union. Even during the Cold War, they tried to follow their own rules. Today, the idea still shapes how the country talks to the rest of the world. It remains a central part of their national identity and their way of life.
