His path to power started many years before he became the top leader. He joined the Workers' Party of Korea in July 1961. He worked in many different roles within the party and the army. One important job was in the Propaganda and Agitation Department. In this role, he worked with films, music, and theater. He even helped create a system of ideas for the country. He also suggested that people wear badges with his father's portrait.

These roles helped him become a known figure in North Korean life.

Kim Jong Il's early life was filled with many changes. He was likely born in 1941 or 1942. Some records say he was born in a camp near Voroshilov. His official biography says he was born on Paektu Mountain. His mother was named Kim Jong-suk. When he was a young boy, his family moved to Pyongyang. This is the capital city of North Korea.

He went to school there and was active in youth groups. He even studied politics while he was a student.

Leading a country is a very hard job with many big challenges. During his time as leader, North Korea faced a serious economic crisis. The country relied on the Soviet Union for food and supplies. When the Soviet Union dissolved, North Korea suffered a famine. This meant there was not enough food for many people. To manage this, Kim used a policy called Songun. This policy put the military first in everything the country did.

He also opened the Kaesong Industrial Park in 2003.

Under his leadership, North Korea changed how it related to the world. In October 2006, the country conducted its first nuclear test. This made North Korea the ninth nuclear-armed state in the world. Before he died, Kim worked to prepare his son to lead. He gave his son, Kim Jong Un, high positions in the party. In September 2010, Kim Jong Un was promoted to help lead.
