Jang Song-thaek was a very important politician in North Korea. He belonged to the country's ruling family through his marriage. He married Kim Kyong-hui, who was the only daughter of the former leader Kim Il Sung. This marriage made him the uncle of Kim Jong Un, the current leader of North Korea.

Because of these family ties, he held many high positions in the government. People believed he had great power over the country for many years. He was a key person who helped make big decisions for the nation.

Jang's life followed a path of rising through the government ranks. He was born in Chongjin around January or February of 1946. After finishing high school, he went to Moscow State University to study.

He returned to North Korea and began working for the Workers' Party of Korea. He started as an instructor for the Pyongyang City Committee. Later, he worked as a manager at a steel and ironworks in Nampo. During his career, he held many different roles in the party and the government.

His career had many ups and downs over several decades. In the late 1970s, his work slowed down when he was sent to manage a factory. Some reports said this happened because he was becoming too powerful. He even suffered severe burns in an accident at that factory.

However, his career recovered and he gained much more influence. By 2010, he became a vice-chairman of the National Defence Commission. This position was second only to the supreme leader of the country.

Jang was a very busy leader with many specific duties. He was a four-star general and a key adviser to Kim Jong Un.

He helped manage economic zones and worked to keep good ties with China. In 2012, he even led a large group to meet with Chinese leaders. He also helped oversee the building of a new bridge over the Yalu River. These tasks showed how much responsibility he carried for the state.

His time in power ended very suddenly in late 2013. The government accused him of being a counter-revolutionary.

This meant they believed he was working against the state. They took away all his jobs and removed his image from official photos. On December 13, 2013, state media announced he had been executed by a firing squad. His quick rise and fall remain a major part of North Korean history.
