Jang Song-thaek was a powerful leader in North Korea. He was part of the ruling family. He married Kim Kyong-hui, who was the sister of Kim Jong Il. This made him the uncle of Kim Jong Un, the current leader.

Jang studied at Moscow State University. He held many important jobs in the Workers' Party of Korea. He even became a four-star general. He was a top adviser to Kim Jong Un. He helped with big tasks, like building a bridge over the Yalu River. He also worked to keep good ties with China.

However, his power began to change. Some leaders thought he was too close to China. In December 2013, the government accused him of being a counter-revolutionary. This meant they thought he was working against the state. They took away all his jobs. They even removed his face from official photos.

Shortly after, the state media said he was executed by a firing squad. His life went from being a top leader to a very sudden end.
