A buttress is a special structure built against a wall. It projects out from the side to provide support. This structure helps to reinforce the wall. It is very useful for many different buildings. Architects use them to make walls much stronger. This makes the whole building safer and more steady.

Buttresses work by fighting sideways forces. Sometimes a roof is not braced well enough. This causes the roof to push sideways on the walls. A buttress acts against these lateral forces. Lateral means moving from side to side. The buttress pushes back to keep the wall in place. This prevents the wall from leaning or falling over.

People have used these structures for a very long time. We can find early examples in ancient places. The Eanna Temple is one such example. This temple is located in ancient Uruk. It dates back as far as the 4th millennium BC. This shows that builders have used buttresses for thousands of years. They have always known how to support heavy walls.

There are many different types of buttresses. Some are made of brick or masonry. Masonry is a word for stone or brick work. Some buttresses support the corners of a building. A clasping buttress has an L-shaped ground plan. It wraps around the corner of the wall. An angled buttress has two parts that meet at a corner.

A setback buttress is similar to an angled one. However, these are set back from the corner. A diagonal buttress, also called a French buttress, cuts across the corner angle.

You might see these on many famous buildings. Many ancient buildings use a Gothic style. These buildings often use flying buttresses for support. You might also see them on dams or retaining walls. In those cases, the term counterfort is often used. A counterfort is another name for a buttress. These structures help hold back the weight of the earth. They keep things from moving when they should stay still.
