A buttress is a part built against a wall. It helps to support or reinforce the wall. This is very helpful for old buildings. Many old buildings have a Gothic style. These buildings often have roofs that push sideways. The buttress acts against these sideways forces. This keeps the walls steady and safe.

People use different kinds of buttresses. Some are made of brick. Other kinds use masonry, which means stone or brick. Some buttresses sit on the corners of a building. A clasping buttress has an L-shape. It wraps around the corner. An angled buttress has two parts that meet at the corner. A setback buttress is like the angled kind. But these parts sit back from the corner. A diagonal buttress goes across the corner.

These parts have been used for a long time. One early example is at the Eanna Temple. That temple is from the 4th millennium BC.
