Flying buttress

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Big stone ceilings are very heavy. They push outward on walls. Wind can also push on roofs. This outward push is called lateral force. To stop walls from falling, builders use a flying buttress.

A flying buttress has two main parts. First, there is a massive pier. This is a large, heavy block of stone. It sits away from the building. Second, there is an arch. This arch connects the pier to the wall. We call this arch a flyer.

These parts work together to move weight. The arch carries the force from the wall to the pier. Then, the pier sends the force to the ground. This system was very popular in Gothic architecture.

Because the piers do the heavy work, walls can be thinner. This lets builders add large windows. Many of these windows use colored glass. This makes the inside of a church very bright. It also makes the space feel open.
