It sits in front of the main walls. The name comes from a word for tongs. It looks like the lip of a pair of pincers.

These walls help protect a small gate. We call this a postern gate. This gate is low in the main wall. It lets defenders reach the ditches in front. A tenaille sits in front of the gate. It is often shaped like a V. This shape hides the gate from view. It keeps guards from being shot at. They can move without being seen.

Some designs have changed over time. Some have extra parts on the ends. Other shapes look like a priest's cap. A priest's cap has two tenailles. A ravelin is another triangular part. It also protects a gate. A man named Vauban helped make these designs. In 1649, Oliver Cromwell wrote about a tenaille. It helped during a fight at Drogheda.
