A graphometer is a tool for measuring angles.

It is shaped like a half circle. This shape is called a limb. The limb is divided into 180 degrees. Some versions have even smaller marks called minutes.

A compass sits in the middle of the tool. This helps the user find North. There is also a moving bar called an alidade. The alidade has two sights to look through.

To use it, you must find the angle's tip. You place the middle of the tool at that tip. You use sights to line up one side of the angle. Then, you move the alidade to line up the other side.

You can then read the angle on the limb. This tool was used to plan big gardens. It helped people move shapes from a small plan to a large landscape. Some old tools used open sights. Other tools used a small tube called a telescope.
