A tenaille is an advanced defensive work used in fort construction. It is located in front of the main defenses of a fortress. This structure helps protect the primary walls from attackers. The name comes from the French word for tongs. It also derives from the Late Latin word tenacula. This name was chosen because the shape resembles the lip of a pair of pincers.

To understand how a tenaille works, we must look at the postern gate. A postern gate is a small gate placed low in a curtain wall. The curtain wall is the main defensive wall of a fort. This gate allows defenders to reach the ditches in front of the wall. A tenaille is placed in front of this gate as an outwork. It was originally shaped like a V. This outwork provides a protected area for the defenders. They can leave the fortification without being seen by enemies. It also prevents them from being shot at directly.

There are several different types of these defensive structures. A simple tenaille appears as a chevron between two corner bastions. A bastion is a projecting part of a fortification. Other designs evolved to be more complex. Some versions of the tenaille possess projections at each end. There are also structures called a priest's cap. A priest's cap is a specific shape that contains two tenailles. Another triangular outwork used to protect gates is called a ravelin.

Engineers and leaders helped formalize these fortification developments. A man named Vauban was one of the people who formalized these designs. History shows the importance of these works during military conflicts. On September 16, 1649, Oliver Cromwell wrote a letter to John Bradshaw. Bradshaw was the President of the Council of State in London. Cromwell wrote this letter from Dublin. He described a tenaille that played a significant part during the storming of Drogheda. This event shows how these works functioned in real combat.

We can still see examples of these architectural elements today. One notable example is located in Valletta. This specific site is known as St. Andrew's Tenaille.

Seeing these structures helps us understand how fortresses were built. They were not just simple walls. They were complex systems of shapes and gates. Every part had a specific job to do. The tenaille was a key part of that system.

These defensive works are part of the broader field of fortification. Fortification is the process of making a place strong against attack. It involves using geometry and clever placement of walls. The use of the tenaille shows how defenders used space to their advantage. By creating V-shaped areas, they controlled where people could move. This control was essential for protecting the main gates of a city or fort. It turned a simple wall into a layered defense system.

In summary, the tenaille is a vital component of historical military architecture. It protects the postern gate from direct fire. It allows defenders to move through ditches safely. Whether it is a simple chevron or a complex priest's cap, the goal is protection. From the writings of Cromwell to the stones of Valletta, these works have a long history. They show the clever ways people designed structures to stay safe.
