A tenaille is a special part of a fortress.

It sits in front of the main walls to help defend the fort. The name comes from a French word for tongs. It also comes from the Late Latin word tenacula. This name was chosen because it looks like the lip of a pair of pincers.

These structures were very important for keeping a fort safe from attack.

This part of a fort works to protect a small gate. This gate is called a postern gate. It is placed low in the main curtain wall. The gate lets defenders reach the ditches in front of the wall. A tenaille is built in front of this gate to hide it. It was often shaped like a V. This shape lets guards leave the fort without being seen. It also stops them from being shot at directly.

Many people helped develop these ways to build forts. A man named Vauban helped make these designs formal.

Some designs changed over many years. A simple tenaille is a chevron between two corner bastions. Other versions have extra projections at each end. Some shapes look like a priest's cap. A priest's cap is a shape that has two tenailles.

A ravelin is another triangular shape used to protect gates.

On September 16, 1649, Oliver Cromwell wrote a letter. He was the President of the Council of State in London. He wrote the letter from Dublin. He described a tenaille that was used in a fight. This tenaille played a big part during the storming of Drogheda. These real events show how important these walls were.

It is helpful to think of a tenaille as a shield. Just as a shield covers a person, a tenaille covers a gate. It creates a safe space for people to move. You can see examples of these works in places like Valletta.
