A ravelin is a triangular wall.

It sits in front of a big fort. This wall is part of a larger system. It is an outwork, which means it is a separate part built outside the main walls.

Long ago, ravelins were small. They were built to protect a bridge. The bridge led across a moat to the fort gate. This made it hard for enemies to attack the gate. In the 16th century, people built larger ones. They put them in front of other walls too. A builder named Daniel Specklin said they were very important. He wanted them to be as large as possible.

These walls help in two ways. First, guns on the ravelin can fire at attackers. This happens as they move toward the main walls. Second, the ravelin stops enemy guns from hitting the main wall. The side facing the fort often has a very low wall. This keeps enemies from hiding there. Some ravelins had ramps or stairs. These helped soldiers move quickly to the wall.
