An aid agency is a group that helps people.

These groups are also called development charities. Some agencies work for governments. Other groups are private and do not belong to any government. These are called non-governmental organisations.

There are two main ways to help. The first way is humanitarian aid. This is help for emergencies. It might happen after a natural disaster. The second way is development aid. This help aims to stop poverty. It helps countries grow in a way that lasts. Some agencies do both kinds of work.

Some groups have been around for a very long time. The Sovereign Order of Malta started in 1099. It has helped people for over 900 years. It has been in Rome since 1834. The International Committee of the Red Cross is also very old. It is the second-oldest group of its kind. A special treaty helps this group do its work. This group follows rules called the Geneva Conventions. These rules help them protect people.
